The Best Time to Visit the Whitsundays

The best time to visit the Whitsundays is during the dry season, from May to October, when you can expect warm days in the mid-20s°C, low humidity, reliable trade winds for sailing, calm seas and the clearest visibility on the Great Barrier Reef. These months are the most popular for good reason but every season has its own character, and there is really no bad time to see the islands.

The Whitsundays Season by Season

Dry season (May to October) — the peak and the best all-rounder. Sunny, comfortable days, cooler evenings, minimal rain and excellent reef conditions. June to August is the coolest and most predictable, with daytime temperatures around 20–24°C. September and October are warm, lively and in high demand.

Wet/green season (November to April) — warmer, quieter and lush. Expect higher temperatures and humidity, warm water, occasional tropical downpours and fewer crowds. March and April tend to bring the highest heat and humidity. The islands are at their greenest, and accommodation can be better value outside peak.

What About Marine Stingers?

Marine stinger season in the Whitsundays runs during the warmer months, roughly October/November to May. During this time it is strongly recommended to wear a stinger suit when swimming or snorkelling in open ocean water. Many tours provide stinger suits, and popular spots like the Airlie Beach Lagoon offer safe, stinger-free swimming year-round. See our marine stingers guide and reef safety tips for full details.

Which Month Is Right for You?

Choose June to August for the driest, most comfortable weather and the best sailing conditions. Choose September to October for warm water and a lively atmosphere (note this is peak demand). Choose November to April for warmer swimming, lush scenery, fewer crowds and better-value accommodation; just pack for the occasional shower and plan for stinger suits in the water.
